How do you stay fit and healthy? Why is it important to you?
At the age of 61, I continue my fitness regime that I started back in high school while playing sports. I stay fit and healthy by #1 having a positive attitude at all times…it all starts upstairs! I was blessed with good genes, at 6'2" and 210 lbs, but I work DAILY to maintain. I was diagnosed with malignant melanoma 28 years ago,when my daughter was born…I wasn't going to let that take me down…too much to live for. I UPPED my routines, ate better, and I'm in BETTER shape than I was when I was playing college ball.
How do you maintain a healthy lifestyle? How has that lifestyle helped you overcome challenges in your life?
RIght after school each day (I teach High School) I hit the gym and alternate all muscle groups. I run, competing in marathons with my daughter and friends. I have been Palio for four years, don't drink, smoke or put anything artificial in my body. Working out, looking good and staying fit has given me confidence, and perhaps the GREATEST thing is I INSPIRE my students…they all look at me and ask for advise, which I'm happy to give. Being fit, mentally and physically, will help anyone overcome the challenges of life.
How do you give back to your community/friends/family?
My daughter and I play music together www.amberleigh.com She and I travel the world doing this. Together we do many benefits for The American Cancer Society, Horses for the Handicapped, The Forgotten Soldiers and Humane Society. We are role models on stage…people come up to us and are amazed at the daughter/dad act, and our "Physical presence." They ask us about working out, diet, etc. I personally give back by teaching my students the basics of health, diet, working out and maintaining a positive life-style. I get FB messages daily from students who tell me I influenced them.
How do you measure success? Have you achieved it?
Oh yes, I'm a SUCCESS…as a high school teacher, I'm not rich, but my LIFE is SO RICH…I'm healthy, I play music and run/work-out with my daughter. I have found inner-peace and relaxation through living a healthy, peaceful, giving life. I know that I have inspired not only my students, but also guys way younger than me…I have men in their 30's coming up to me in the gym asking…"how do I do it?" I have achieved success…it's not money, cars or women, but peace of mind, a strong, fit body, and knowing that you inspire others. SUCCESS!
