How do you stay fit and healthy? Why is it important to you?
As the Global Head of Hilton Garden Inn and father of two-year-old twins and a 19-year-old college student, my life is incredibly busy – but I make exercise a priority. I work out every day during lunch and fuel my body with healthy foods. I’m a runner (I’ve finished 4 marathons!) and I’ve maintained a regular core routine of 1200 crunches 3x/week. But, it wasn’t until I added resistance training (3-4x/week) that I stabilized my weight. As a 58-year-old father to toddlers, I don’t want them worrying about my health – I want to play alongside them!
How do you maintain a healthy lifestyle? How has that lifestyle helped you overcome challenges in your life?
After my twins were born, I gained 40 pounds due to poor diet and little exercise. I needed to make a change, so I applied my business mindset to my health. Instead of tracking revenue and expenses, I tracked calories consumed and burned. I also took a personal trainer course through the ISSA and shed 50 pounds! When on the road visiting hotels, I start each day in the fitness center. It helps me wake up and jumpstart my metabolism. As a result, I’ve found that I’m sharper and have more energy at work and at home.
How do you give back to your community/friends/family?
I'm lucky to work for a company that cares about the health of its employees. When Hilton Worldwide implemented a Wellness program, I jumped at the chance to be Designated “Wellness Champion” for the Memphis campus. I encourage our 1,000 team members to make healthy eating choices and find new opportunities for exercise. I organize ‘walk-mobs’ (surprise mid-day walks around the block) and installed a treadmill desk. At home, I support my wife as much as possible (twins are a handful!) – you can find me cooking, cleaning, changing diapers and helping to keep the routine on track.
How do you measure success? Have you achieved it?
Success is reaching a goal and maintaining it. Having been a yo-yo dieter for years, I’ve worked hard to maintain my new weight, and have done so successfully for the past six months – a personal record! I rely on apps such as Lose It and Nike Fuel to track my progress – for the past year, I’ve tracked every single meal and workout. I do my best to achieve success in the many roles I play – as a father, husband and businessman, it’s all about balance. I’m constantly striving to better myself.
